Forestry & Woodland Conservation

There are approximately 150 hectares of woodlands at Lennoxlove, planted in diverse mixtures equally between conifers and broadleaves. Oak and Scots Pine are our most important species but more than 20 others can be found, including towering Douglas fir and ancient yews. Many of the woodlands are plantations of long term origin, and can be identified on General Roy’s maps in the 1750s.

Our woodlands are managed on a continuous cover principle; Long term thinning and restocking programmes provide timber for construction and woodfuel while avoiding the need to clearfell and retaining the woods as an attractive landscape structure in perpetuity. This approach maximises their viability as woodland habitat, with flowers, seeds, berries and standing deadwood providing for a wide range of insects, birds and mammals. Large veteran trees, many of them hundreds of years old are retained as treasured landscape features, and provide roosts for bats and birds.
